What is Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry?

Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, also known as Psychosomatic Medicine, is a subspecialty of psychiatry focused on the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions in patients with medical and surgical problems, often when patients have complex or long-term conditions.  Physicians specializing in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry have an in-depth understanding of how medical conditions are affected by psychiatric problems, and how psychological factors affect physical conditions. Additionally, medical conditions, medications, and metabolic problems may cause psychiatric symptoms and Consultation-Liaison psychiatrists are trained to determine the way psychiatric and medical problems relate to each other, and recommend the most appropriate treatments.  For more information please visit the website of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at https://www.clpsychiatry.org
